DNS change checks
Which records are watched and what a DNS change alert means.
What's watched
Every 15 minutes Pingerer looks up the domain's A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS and TXT records (choose which on the monitor) and compares them with the last answer. The first lookup becomes the starting point.
When something changes
A change opens a DNS changed incident straight away and alerts you with what was removed and what was added. More changes while it's open are added to the same incident.
- If you or someone you trust made the change, click Mark as expected. The new records become the starting point.
- If you didn't, put the old values back at your DNS provider and find out who has access. A changed
NSrecord you didn't expect can mean someone else controls your domain.
What each record does
| Record | Points |
|---|---|
| A / AAAA | Your domain at a server's IPv4 / IPv6 address |
| CNAME | A name at another name (often used for www and hosted services) |
| MX | Where your email is delivered |
| NS | Which DNS provider answers for your domain |
| TXT | Text for verification and email security (SPF, DMARC and others) |
Avoiding noise
Some services rotate records often (for example, a CDN's A records). If a record type changes constantly and that's normal for you, untick it on the monitor.
